KIRRA'S STORY
My mother would say I have always been a dancer. It was, in fact, my mother who first introduced me to Tango. It took me a few years to catch on to what it was but the first time I saw it, I was hooked.
Spring of 1999, Salt Spring Island, a workshop with Miguel Pla. I was so nervous at the milonga. I think I was wearing a pair of chinos and my Doc Martin boots but Miguel got me out on the floor and said, "the only way to learn, is to do." The rest is history.
The next Monday I signed up for lessons with Susanna Domingues in Vancouver and took classes from Miguel twice a year. I didn't choose tango, tango chose me.
Life brought me to the Comox Valley in the Fall of 2000. I would make the long drive to Salt Spring, Victoria and even Vancouver to dance every chance I could. For a year I was going to Salt Spring once a week.
In the summer of 2003 I started teaching in Courtenay. Miguel had given me his 'seal of approval' but it took me a while before I started classes.
For the past few years now I have hosted Miguel and helped organize his west coast tour. Teaching tango on the north island has helped me stay connected to the dance I love and the people that I have met along the way.
